Why would TCM say “Eating Ginger in summer and having Radish in winter”?

In summer hot days, our body desires to eat more cold foods and drinks, that may weaken our gut and digestive system; Wearing a wet bathing suit for too long can lead to a vaginal yeast infection.

According the “Yin and Yang” theory in Chinese medicine, when weather is changing, our body's Yang energy is spreading to the outer layer for more activities, relatively the inner body ”lacks” of Yang, especially the internal organ like the gastrointestinal system.

Fresh Ginger has mild warming properties for the stomach, which is beneficial for digestive issues caused by Qi deficiency (low energy). Also, it has properties to dispel cold and dampness. Ingesting ginger increases the secretion of gastric juices. This helps the body digest food more quickly.

Ginger contains antifungal compounds called gingerol and shagelol and anti-inflammatory agents. Studies show ginger can inhibit the growth of C. albicans. In one study, an antifungal cream with added ginger was more effective at relieving yeast infections than the antifungal cream without ginger.

Try this:

  1. Simmer broccoli, cauliflower, onions, curry powder and chopped ginger root in broth and coconut milk in vitaclay for 20 minutes on "Stew" or "fast" then purée into a creamy soup;
  2. Simmer grated ginger root and zucchini “noodles” in vegetable or bone broth in vitaclay on "Stew" or Fast" setting for 20 minutes then top with sliced green onions, bean sprouts, chopped basil and sliced jalapeño peppers for a candida-fighting pho.

Ginger has antimicrobial and antibacterial effect, having a bit more ginger in summer actually will be good to balance our body Yin and Yang, and prevent the gastrointestinal problems,

Ginger can also be used to help treat colds or the flu. Combining ginger with scallions and making a hot water broth can help kick out a cold quickly. The combination of scallions and ginger will heat the body up, making you sweat a little. This may be just what is needed for sweating out the infection.

Pain and inflammation are rampant in the world today, but ginger can provide some relief. Studies show ginger consumption can reduce muscle aches and pains. Ginger has also been used in studies on cancer, showing decreased inflammation in the body.

Ginger is loaded with antioxidants, compounds that prevent stress and damage to your body’s DNA. They may help your body fight off chronic diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diseases of the lungs, plus promote healthy aging.

To maintain a general good health, 2-3 slices of raw ginger a day is a good amount.
