Make Easy, Delicious Spiced Applesauce, Slow Cooked in Clay!

Suitable for VitaClay Models VS7600, VF7700, VM7900 series.

Applesauce is a staple in many houses: especially those with young children. It’s great to have a quick, healthy snack on hand for when the kids need a little something sweet: something to stick in the diaper bag or in a lunch box.

Apples are sweet, healthy and full of fiber, so they’re a great choice for kids. What if you don’t really like the little “extra” ingredients that come in your applesauce, though? Or you wonder why it’s so expensive if all that’s in it is apples. Do you wonder what it would taste like fresh? It’s really good.

Once you taste your own home-made applesauce and realize how easy and inexpensive it is to make in VitaClay, I’m willing to bet that you won’t be buying it any more. You could even experiment with lacto-fermenting it to add in some great probiotic power. This applesauce is great plain, and served cold or warm. It goes really well over ice cream (think apple pie a la mode).

It's great mixed in with yogurt or with sour cream over latkes or fish... And it’s so easy to make your own flavored applesauce: just add blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, peaches… the possibilities are endless! So let’s get to it!

Ingredients:

  • 8 apples
  • ½ c water (or mix it up with elderberry, pomegranate or elderberry juice for an anti-oxidant punch and flavor)
  • ¾ c coconut sugar (experiment with these ratios to find your “sweet spot.” Also if you’re using juice, use less sugar--leave it out for unsweetened)
  • ½ t pumpkin pie spice mix (leave this out if you want plain applesauce)

Directions:

  1. Peel, core and slice apples
  2. Add apples water into the clay pot
  3. Close, seal and set to “stew” for 1-2 hours, until soft
  4. Add spices and sugar, and cook for another 15 minutes
  5. If it’s too chunky, use an immersion blender to puree
